The Green Project diverts massive amounts of tonnage from area landfills—1,050 tons of material each year.  Most estimates of landfill contents indicate that more than 17% of landfill material is the result of construction and demolition (C&D waste).   Much of that material is structurally sound and reusable if diverted from the waste stream.  The Green Project accepts materials that would otherwise fill our landfills, and makes them available in the marketplace at reduced pricing.

Homeowners, remodelers, and contractors can bring small quantities of excess or removed materials to the Green Project.   For larger quantities, we offer a pick up service, usually at no charge. Call Gene at 504-578-0188 to arrange a pick up.

The Green Project is also involved in selective salvage operations in the New Orleans area.  Currently, we are contracted to several agencies assigned the task of demolishing houses that are scheduled for removal  due to blight.  The Green Project’s deconstruction crew removes the useful materials  from houses before demolition begins, saving  the materials that can be saved and putting them back to use in the community.

“Embedded energy” is the energy used in the work of making a product.  When manufacturing new building materials energy is required to extract the raw materials, run the factories, and transport the goods.  When purchasing used materials, consumers save a great deal of embedded energy on the production side.  This reduces the impact of consumer’s activities on the environment, or carbon footprint, resulting from the construction or home improvement projects.
